Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is still buzzing about his move to Munich to play for German Bundesliga record champions, Bayern Munich.
The 30-year-old striker believes that the move will put him in the line of vision of the Ballon d’Or selection committee as Bayern’s penchant for trophies and his ambitions will help him become a contender that cannot be glossed over.
Kane had a historic 13 years at Spurs. Some of it was spent on loan but for the better part of a decade, the England Three Lions captain had little competition for the Premier League’s best player.
With 213 goals, he is the league’s highest active goalscorer. He is also less than 50 away from the all-time record set by Alan Shearer, one he may not be able to break any time soon thanks to his move to Germany.
Kane, however, is excited about this new phase of his career and believes that he can handle the Bayern pressure to win trophies and make as much of a mark as Robert Lewandowski did while he was with the Bavarians.
Speaking ahead of his official league debut for der Rekordmeister at the weekend, Kane pointed out that the opportunity to win trophies for the first time in his career led him to make the decision to leave his boyhood club.
“If you are winning your league and the Champions League, and obviously we as England have the European Championship next summer as well… as we’ve seen with the Ballon d’Or, you have to be winning team trophies to achieve that,” said Kane. “If I’m scoring goals and we are winning trophies then that will come into question, but it is not really what my focus is on now.
“I have always said I never want to retire and feel like I could have done more. That was a big part of the decision-making process to come to Bayern. You want to make sure you’ve pushed yourself to your limits.”
He added: “If you don’t win or perform well at Bayern Munich there are going to be question marks over you. I have been able to handle that over my career, whether it is with Tottenham or England.”
Kane has only two years to make his mark at Bayern and finally add a trophy to his cabinet which already has a host of impressive personal accolades. He will also be trying to avoid the scrutiny that will come from the British media who are largely unhappy that their golden goose has moved to another league.
talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist said on his segment earlier in the week that Kane should have pushed for a move to Manchester United.
The Scotsman believes that Kane would have not only broken Shearer’s record but he would have earned the trophy he wanted while still remaining England’s golden boy.
The Bundesliga season starts on Friday 18 August with reigning champions Bayern taking on Werder Bremen. Kane will make his debut and hope to get the ball rolling on his goalscoring as he eyes trophies and a Ballon d’Or place.
