Phil Foden was pleased with a comfortable night for City as he bagged his 11th Champions League goal of his career in his side’s 1-3 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday night.
The Englishman connected brilliantly with a cutback from Rico Lewis to put City ahead after 25 minutes, before Leipzig pulled one back to level the scoring through Lois Openda.
Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku both came off the bench for City to score and secure a deserved three points at the Red Bull Arena.
Foden, who was awarded the Player of the Match after a lively display in Germany, was delighted after adding to his Champions League tally.
Foden’s reaction after man-of-the-match display
“It’s very satisfying to score in the biggest competition. It’s always a delight for me,” he said.
“It’s something for me to add on now, keep scoring goals, I think it’s important.
“We know what they’re about. The last time we played them, we were very good in the first half then they came out in the second half and performed.”
“At half time the manager said we have to be ready because they will come out firing.
“They scored an early goal which wasn’t ideal, but the way the team reacted and the way we controlled the game, it was an unbelievable display today.
“The last two games were not ideal for us. We’ve come off the back of two rubbish results.
“Today we had to make that right. We definitely did that. The way we performed throughout the full game was a delight to watch so I’m really happy.”
In-form Julian Alvarez came off the bench to score once again and Foden was quick to hail his teammate and commend his consistency in front of goal so far this season.
“Julian has been top this season. His goal was magical. He’s scoring a lot of goals. He’s someone we look to for big goals this season”, he added.
“I’m happy for him because he came on and changed the game. He’s a really important player for us.
“Lewis was brilliant today in midfield. He broke a lot of lines. Rico has the courage to play at such a young age.
“I’m really happy for him. It’s nice to have an Academy player on the pitch with me today so yeah I’m happy for him.”
City will now be looking forward to a massive game against Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend – in what would be one of the most anticipated games of the campaign.
