Fans jeer Manchester United in Kuala Lumpur

Manchester United’s disappointing season continued in Asia as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur. Head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledged the boos that echoed around the Bukit Jalil Stadium at full-time, suggesting the reaction might be a useful lesson for his underperforming squad.

Following a Premier League-ending win over Aston Villa, United embarked on a post-season tour, only to be greeted by familiar problems. In oppressive heat and humidity, Amorim’s team squandered a host of scoring chances and were ultimately undone by a second-half strike from Myanmar’s Maung Maung Lwin. Despite utilizing 25 outfield players in an attempt to rotate and find rhythm, United couldn’t find a breakthrough. The match drew 72,550 fans, many of whom paid over £250 for a ticket, only to vent frustration at full-time.

Amorim did not shy away from responsibility, stating, “I always feel responsible for the team’s performance since my arrival.” He acknowledged the rare reaction from supporters, noting the loyalty they had shown throughout a dismal campaign. “The boos maybe are something we need,” he added, referencing the consistent support fans had offered during Premier League defeats.

Transfer moves and uncertain futures

While Amorim declined to comment on the expected £62.5m signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, the club appears to be pressing ahead with changes. He remained tight-lipped about any developments, simply stating, “You have to wait for that for the next season.”

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is reportedly close to a one-year contract extension, while United are awaiting a decision on Ipswich forward Liam Delap. The 21-year-old, valued at £30m, has caught the attention of several clubs, but United believe the choice lies between them and Chelsea. Delap wants his future settled before the Under-21 European Championship in June.

Captain Bruno Fernandes, whose name has been linked with interest from Saudi Arabia, remains with the touring party and will be part of the squad heading to Hong Kong. Also traveling is winger Alejandro Garnacho, though he has been informed he is free to find another team.

Planning ahead amid continued struggles

United’s season has seen them finish 15th in the Premier League with only 42 points – their poorest showing since the 1973-74 relegation campaign. The club also fell short in Europe, losing 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao, missing out on a Champions League spot.

Amorim confessed that the team lacks the ability to handle pressure consistently, admitting: “We don’t have it in us not to choke… that is what happened.” Despite this, the club’s leadership maintains there is a plan in place. Speaking before the match, CEO Omar Berrada outlined their approach: “We have been planning for many months… we have a very clear idea of where we need to invest.”

With Rasmus Hojlund scoring just four goals across 32 league appearances, attacking reinforcements appear essential. Amorim remains hopeful that the summer break might restore confidence and spark a turnaround. “Sometimes just coming back to a new season can make a difference,” he said.

As the team heads to Hong Kong for the final match of the tour – with 10,000 tickets still available – Amorim urged fans to keep faith. Reflecting on his own experiences supporting Benfica during difficult years, he said, “If you can afford it… you support your club.”
