Former Arsenal and Real Madrid ace Mesut Ozil will consider venturing into Esports after his football career, according to his agent Dr Erkut Sogut.
The 2014 World Cup winner has had a torrid past few years in his football career. The Fernabache man was relegated to the background during his last season with Arsenal and this caused on and off field problems for the German.
Ozil then terminated his contract with the Gunners and joined Fernabache in 2021. He has scored eight times and recorded nine assists since he joined the Turkish giants in a move that was greeted with so much expectation and anticipation.
Ozil’s future in Turkey looks dim
Though his contract is not up till 2024, his future in Turkey is already looking bleak, as the head coach Jorge Jesus excluded the midfielder from the squad in March. At the moment, it is looking like the status quo of his time at the club will not get better.
Ozil, who is known to be an excessive gamer, will most likely venture into Esports after his career in football, according to his agent Erkut Sogut, who confirmed this in an interview with the telegraph.
“He will go more into eSports, play himself and maybe become an eSports athlete,” he said.
“He’s really good, to be honest, at Fortnite and I think one day I wouldn’t be surprised if he is competing.”
“He owns a team – M10 Esports – and he has players. He has a gaming house in Germany. He has football, like FIFA, and Fortnite.”
This move from football to Esports is seen as a fall from grace for the world cup winner who is known to be one of the best playmakers of his generation. Issues like injuries, verbal abuse and a wrong attitude has really plagued the player and robbed us of the quality he possesses.
While Ozil’s talent remains undeniable, the question of commitment to the game and his overall attitude on the pitch has plagued his overall career. The German has more than often meddled into politics as well; a scenario that has seen him thrown under the bus at both club and international level.
Regardless, Ozil has managed to build one of the most reputable brands by a footballer and coupled with his loyal fanbase, venturing into eSports could yet work out for the player after he hangs up his boots.
