Cristiano Ronaldo was visibly angry after his substitution in the league tie against Newcastle on Sunday. The Portugal international has not enjoyed a great relationship with Ten Hag since he arrived at Old Trafford.
Manchester United might be in the fifth position on the log and challenging for a place in the top four, but all is not well at Old Trafford. Several players at Man United have taken knocks for their quality and what they have delivered for the club.
Some players who have not earned their keep at the club include Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. They have many times turned up shocking displays that befuddle the mind. Erik Ten Hag continues the struggle to fashion out a winning team.
Whilst Ten Hag is trying to get the best out of his players, he has another problem on his hands. The Dutch manager is seeking answers to his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo. The latest spat between the pair came during the last game between United and Newcastle. The Portugal superstar did not take his substitution in the game on the chin.
Ronaldo is angry at being substituted
Cristiano Ronaldo is having a difficult second season at Manchester United. The Portugal international, who sought a move away from the club in the summer, is unhappy at the club and not enjoying the best relationship with Ten Hag. He has often criticized the methods of the Dutchman since he arrived at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo has worked with some of the best managers in the game, winning five Champions League trophies in the process, and is not finding his situation at Old Trafford funny. Ten Hag took Ronaldo out of the game against Newcastle at the weekend, and the all-time leading goalscorer in the Champions League was furious.
Erik Ten Hag insists he has no problems with Ronaldo, despite his outburst. Ronaldo started the game at Old Trafford (a rare occurrence this season). The Portugal international was substituted with 18 minutes of the game left, with Manchester United still looking for a goal. Marcus Rashford took his place, but Ronaldo stormed off the pitch making his anger known to the manager.
Ten Hag understands Ronaldo’s reaction
Ten Hag came to the defence of Ronaldo. He said no player is happy at being substituted, especially not a star like the Portuguese. Ten Hag understands the feeling and has no problem with the reaction. Ten Hag opines that Ronaldo believed he should have remained on the pitch and could have scored a goal.
Ronaldo looks set to keep his place against Spurs at Old Trafford, as Anthony Martial is unavailable.
