Erik ten Hag under fire from former Man United player over poor results

Dwight Yorke has called out Dutchman Erik ten Hag over the results that Manchester United have ground out from their last few Premier League outings.

Erik ten Hag took the United job in the summer of 2022 and started on the back foot. A heavy defeat to Brentford followed an opening day home loss to Brighton and Hove Albion in August.

Those results put the three-time Eredivisie winning-manager on blast in the early stages of his time at Old Trafford. He would recover slowly, first with a win against Liverpool and then find his way back into the top four of the league.

The unpredictability of the English top flight has caught him unawares on a number of occasions and he has had to deal with multiple injuries to his squad, leading to some results that the fans are not so appreciative of. He pacified them a bit by winning the 2023 EFL (Carabao) Cup and is on the verge of winning the 2023 FA Cup.

One trophy in his first season already makes him a successful manager but two will have the fans singing his praises for years to come, given the long title drought they have experienced. However, his struggles in the league have begun again and this has led to even more criticism of his managerial know-how.

The latest to jump on the criticism bandwagon is United legend Dwight Yorke, who was part of many title winning sides in the early days of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign over Old Trafford.

Yorke believes that the results have not been good enough and highlighted the fact that ten Hag has overseen more defeats in less than one season as Manchester United manager than Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer did in his last two seasons in the same role.

Yorke was speaking to King Casino Bonus when he gave his scathing remarks about ten Hag’s time at the club. “If you are a Manchester United manager, you will always be scrutinised for little details or mistakes,” the former United striker said.

“There’s nowhere to hide. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a better record than Ten Hag in his full two seasons managing the club, people talk about the progress we’ve made and the better style of football being played.

“Manchester United have reached the FA Cup final, won the Carabao Cup, and made it far in the Europa League so that is progress, but Ten Hag losing more Premier League games than Solskjaer in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons has to be called out.

“The results have not been good enough this season, Manchester United are looking over their shoulder and are desperately trying to hold on to fourth place, I’m not sure that’s where the club wants to be.

“Ten Hag gets the praise when the team is playing well, he has to take the criticism when it goes wrong too.”
