Erik ten Hag desperate for changes in the wake of criticism from Paul Scholes

Change is once again afoot at Old Trafford after Manchester United unceremonious exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich, which Paul Scholes has criticised Erik ten Hag for.

The Dutchman has been managing a crisis despite vehemently rejecting the idea when it was suggested to him a week ago. The latest downturn of events see him facing even more criticism and comments about the crisis which he denied.

The latest big name to criticise him is former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, who was a serial winner with the club up until a little over a decade ago.

Scholes, who is now a broadcaster, has soft-pedalled on the United issue for some time now. The exit from the Champions League made him take his gloves off totally, and he came for ten Hag bare fisted.

“I think it’s very difficult to decide who is letting who down to be honest,” Scholes began by chastising the whole team for their performance. “These players have let two or three managers down now, a lot of these players have.”

Then he faced ten Hag, claiming that the manager had also failed to get any kind of response from his team.

“Yes, they have a few new faces in there now but the Newcastle performance was worrying for me – I don’t think Ten Hag’s position was being questioned before that but not being able to get his players to work hard enough to face Newcastle was scary,” Scholes added.

“It’s not enough at a club like this, you need to be working week in, week out, it’s not been good enough.”

This opinion is shared by many and it seems ten Hag is also in agreement, according to latest reports from various sources.

The Dutchman reportedly wants a clear out in January and has earmarked a number of players they want sold. Jadon Sancho is the leading name on the list. Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Donny Van De Beek and Anthony Martial are the other names that could follow the Englishman.

Sergio Reguilon could return to Tottenham Hotspur as well because of Luke Shaw’s return. However, the fitness of the Englishman and the assessment of Tyrell Malacia’s injury could let United keep the Spaniard.

Erik ten Hag himself is living on borrowed time as reports also claim that the confirmation of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in the club could spell the end for him come January.

Names have been put forward as potential replacements, one of which is Julen Lopetegui, who most recently managed Wolverhampton Wanderers.
