Undoubtedly, the Qatar 2022 World Cup has proven to be a tournament for the underdogs, with countries like Saudi Arabia, Japan and Morocco all springing surprises. While several top footballing nations like Germany, Spain and Belgium failed to carry their weight, some represented well. The Netherlands, France, Argentina and Brazil went far in the competition.
England, Croatia and the Netherlands were among the dark horses to win the tournament, but only Croatia is still in the competition. The 2018 finalists have confounded many followers of the competition, especially the way they dumped Brazil out of the World Cup. A late comeback saw them clinch victory and reach the semi-final.
England were supposed to emulate Croatia when they took on France, but the Three Lions could not muster the required resources to overcome the defending champions. England lost 2-1 to Les Bleus in a game that could have gone either way. The loss has left England downcast, but a couple of their players have promised they would be back.

A painful defeat for England
There was the belief in the ranks of the Three Lions that they could overcome Les Bleus. It was an exciting and keenly contested affair decided by the tiniest margins. Rashford was on the same page with Jack Grealish. He claimed they came close, but it wasn’t enough. The Manchester United forward promised England would be back and thanked the fans for their unconditional support.
