Edin Terzic leaves Borussia Dortmund after mutual agreement

Borussia Dortmund has announced the departure of manager Edin Terzic, who requested the termination of his contract with immediate effect. Terzic, who led the club to the Champions League final in the 2023-24 season, expressed his desire for a new era to begin under different leadership following discussions with the club’s management.

“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB – including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline,” said Terzic, 41. Despite the difficult decision, Terzic affirmed his stance after thorough consideration and discussions.

“I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you and see you soon,” he added.

Terzic’s tenure at Dortmund was marked by significant achievements, including guiding the team to the German Cup final victory over RB Leipzig and securing qualification for the next season’s Champions League with a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga.

Career path of Edin Terzic: from Dortmund academy to managerial success

Edin Terzic’s journey at Borussia Dortmund began in 2010 when he joined the club’s academy, where he spent three years honing his coaching skills. He later served as assistant to Slaven Bilic at Besiktas and West Ham, before returning to Dortmund in 2018 as Lucien Favre’s assistant coach.

Following Favre’s departure in December 2020, Terzic was appointed interim manager for the remainder of the season. Under his guidance, Dortmund clinched the German Cup title, marking a successful interim stint. Terzic subsequently took on the role of technical director before being appointed as the club’s manager in 2022.

During his managerial tenure, Terzic led Dortmund to notable achievements, including a runners-up finish in the Bundesliga and qualification for the Champions League in the 2023-24 season. His departure from Dortmund marks the end of a chapter characterized by both personal and professional growth within the club.

Acknowledgement and farewell from Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund’s chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Edin Terzic’s contributions, acknowledging his outstanding service to the club. “Edin Terzic has done an outstanding job in his time at BVB, and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude,” stated Watzke, emphasizing the positive relationship they will maintain going forward.

As Dortmund prepares for a new managerial appointment, the club reflects on Terzic’s impact and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
