Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma suffered a significant facial injury during their 4-2 victory against Monaco in Ligue 1.
Donnarumma’s early exit following unfortunate clash
The Italian shot-stopper was forced to leave the pitch in the 22nd minute after a painful collision with Monaco defender Wilfried Singo. The incident occurred as Singo’s boot inadvertently struck Donnarumma’s face, leaving the goalkeeper with severe cuts requiring approximately 10 staples.
Despite the reckless nature of the challenge, Singo avoided any disciplinary action, as the contact was deemed unintentional. Matvey Safonov replaced Donnarumma with the match still goalless at the time.
PSG manager Luis Enrique refrained from criticizing the referees, commenting: “I didn’t clearly see the incident, but decisions like this are always challenging. Players rarely aim to injure, and refereeing such games is not easy.”
Match drama and PSG’s response
After Donnarumma’s departure, the match quickly intensified. Desire Doue gave PSG the lead, but Monaco turned the game around with Eliesse ben Seghir’s penalty and Breel Embolo’s goal.
However, PSG displayed resilience, with Ousmane Dembele scoring twice, sandwiching Goncalo Ramos’ header, to secure a convincing victory. The result extended PSG’s lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table to 10 points as they headed into the holiday break.
Medical update for Donnarumma
Following the game, PSG issued a statement confirming that Donnarumma would undergo further medical assessments and advised that he rest for several days. The extent of his recovery time remains uncertain, but the club is hopeful for his swift return.
