The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) has announced that it will be testing innovative technology featuring a chip inside the football during the Super Cup scheduled for August. This cutting-edge technology, previously utilized during EURO 2024, enables the ball to detect any form of contact, which is then visually represented on a screen. During the European tournament, this feature was primarily applied to identify handballs, including the notable penalty incident involving Joachim Andersen in the round of 16 against Germany.
As this is currently a trial phase, the implementation of this technology in the Bundesliga is not anticipated in the immediate future. Should the tests prove successful, the earliest the Bundesliga might see this technology in use would be the 2025/26 season.
New rule for captains to Address referees
In addition to testing new technology, a rule from the EUROs will be adopted in the Bundesliga. The new regulation stipulates that only the captains of the respective teams are permitted to communicate with the referee. This rule will be applied across all levels of German football, with the objective of expediting the resumption of play during matches.
The upcoming DFL Super Cup, set for August 17th, will feature last season’s domestic double winners, Bayer Leverkusen, as they host the previous season’s runners-up, VfB Stuttgart.
