Dean Huijsen was officially introduced as a Real Madrid player on Tuesday, holding up his new shirt with the number 24 on the back. The central defender arrives from Bournemouth after a standout season, having attracted interest from several top clubs. Among them, Chelsea was said to be leading the race, but Huijsen ultimately chose to move to Spain.
Real Madrid acted swiftly to secure the transfer before the start of the upcoming Club World Cup. The Spanish giants activated his £50 million release clause (€59.5 million or $66.4 million) and completed the deal late last month, marking the first signing under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Wearing 24 and sharing gratitude
The Dutch defender now takes over the number 24 shirt, last worn by Arda Güler during the 2023–24 season. Güler has since changed to 15 for the new campaign.
During his first appearance in front of the media at the Santiago Bernabéu, Huijsen was joined by club president Florentino Pérez. Standing with his new jersey, he spoke of his excitement and appreciation.
Committed to the club’s ambitions
“I want to thank the president,” Huijsen said in his remarks. “Since the moment I got the call from Madrid, I haven’t considered any other destination.”
He acknowledged the support of his family, crediting them for their role in his journey to the top level. “From driving me to sessions to following me around the country, I couldn’t have done it without them,” he said.
Huijsen ended by expressing his determination to help the team succeed. “This is the greatest club in the world. I’ve come here with humility, ready to work, and hoping to celebrate many titles together. Hala Madrid.”
