De Jong Set to Stay at Barcelona Despite Transfer Rumors

Barcelona are expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, but their current financial situation means they must offload players before pursuing key targets. However, one name previously considered among the potential departures is now off the table. Frenkie de Jong, once seen as likely to leave at the end of the season, is now firmly in the club’s plans moving forward.

Earlier in the campaign, the Dutch international was not considered a core member of the squad under Hansi Flick. At that point, many believed his exit was almost inevitable. But the situation has changed significantly, with de Jong now a regular starter. He has earned a spot in Flick’s preferred starting lineup, even ahead of promising talents like Marc Casado and Gavi.

Contract Talks and Transfer Stance

De Jong’s current contract runs until the summer of 2026, which has fueled speculation about his future in recent months. Despite that uncertainty, Barcelona’s leadership is preparing to extend his stay at the club. Sporting director Deco is expected to oversee the negotiations for a new deal in the coming weeks.

According to Relevo, Barcelona have made it clear that the midfielder will not be sold this summer unless an exceptional offer is submitted. Even if an agreement on a renewal is not reached before the transfer window opens, the club still considers him non-transferable under ordinary circumstances. This development is a blow to Premier League sides such as Liverpool and Arsenal, who had been monitoring his situation.

While a contract extension is on the table, Barcelona will also seek to lower de Jong’s salary as part of the new terms. The club remains under pressure to manage its finances more responsibly, and reducing high wages is a key part of that strategy.
