David Moyes makes first Everton signing in second spell

Everton have completed the loan signing of Carlos Alcaraz from Brazilian club Flamengo as the January transfer window comes to a close.

The midfielder has already played in the Premier League with Southampton in the earlier stages of the 2024/25 season before the Saints sold him to the Brazilian club for £16 million, which was a club record transfer fee.

Moyes has brought in the 22-year-old Argentine midfielder with an option to buy from Flamengo if he performs up to par in his six-month loan spell at Goodison Park.

“I am very happy to join Everton, such a great club, with a very good fanbase,” Alcaraz told Everton TV. “I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to start training with my teammates and see the fans at the stadium.

“I am ready for any challenge with this beautiful club so that’s why I came and accepted the offer to keep fighting for my dreams. I want to tell the fans that whenever I wear this shirt, I will give my best, I will give everything I have to take Everton to the top, which is where they deserve to be.”

Moyes said: “We’re happy Carlos has agreed to join us on loan until the end of the season. We’ve been looking to add players to the squad to give us more depth, particularly after the recent injuries we’ve picked up.

“Carlos has Premier League experience, he’s still young and we believe he can bring some energy to the team which will help us between now and the end of the season.”

The Argentina Under-23 international first played in the Premier League against Everton when he moved from Argentina to Southampton in 2023. He performed impressively but Southampton were unable to stay up that season, which means they had to let go of a few key players.

Alcaraz was good enough for Juventus to notice him and he moved on loan to the Turin-based Italian Serie A side in January 2024, where he helped them wint he Coppa Italia. He spent the first half of the 2024/25 season at Flamengo where he would go on to earn 19 caps, scoring three and assisting two goals.

Everton Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, was also pleased with the signing and said: “Charly is a welcome addition to the squad and a player who brings Premier League and international experience and, at the age of 22, has potential to get even better.

“He is an excellent ball carrier who can add real quality to our attack, and we think he is a player who will really excite Evertonians.”
