Crystal Palace’s Mateta Hospitalized After Collision

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has reassured fans that he is “doing well” after being hospitalized due to a dangerous challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. The incident occurred just eight minutes into the FA Cup fifth-round match when Roberts rushed off his line to clear the ball but instead made contact with Mateta’s head.

Referee Robert Jones initially missed the severity of the challenge, but after a VAR review, Roberts was shown a red card. Mateta, 27, received immediate medical attention on the field, including oxygen, before being transported to the hospital. He is set to undergo surgery on his ear as a result of the injury.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed his outrage, describing the challenge as “reckless” and arguing that it posed a serious risk to Mateta’s safety. “In all my years watching football, I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s one of the most dangerous challenges I’ve witnessed, and Roberts needs to reflect on his actions,” Parish told BBC One.

Palace Triumph Despite Early Setback

Despite losing their in-form striker early in the game, Palace went on to secure a 3-1 victory at Selhurst Park. Japhet Tanganga’s own goal and a strike from Daniel Muñoz gave the hosts an early 2-0 lead. Substitute Eddie Nketiah, who replaced Mateta, later found the net to ensure Palace’s progression to the next round.

Manager Oliver Glasner was deeply concerned about Mateta’s condition, stating that the tackle “could have ended his career.” Millwall boss Alex Neil defended his player, insisting that Roberts did not act with malicious intent.

The incident led to a lengthy stoppage, with 13 minutes added to the first half. While Palace remained focused to secure the win, the game was overshadowed by the shocking nature of the foul.

Controversy Over Fan Chants

The Football Association has condemned some Millwall supporters for chanting “let him die” while Mateta was receiving medical attention. However, the governing body stated that these chants do not violate FA regulations. Meanwhile, the FA has launched an investigation into homophobic abuse directed at Chelsea loanee Ben Chilwell during the match.

Mateta, who has been in top form this season with 15 goals in 33 appearances, expressed gratitude for the support he has received. Posting on social media, he reassured fans: “I’m doing well. I hope to be back very soon and stronger than ever. Well done guys for the great job today.”

Crystal Palace will now await updates on Mateta’s recovery as they prepare for their next fixture, hoping to maintain their strong form in his absence.
