Claudio Ranieri has stepped out of retirement to take charge of Roma once again, with his first challenge being a high-stakes clash against Napoli. The experienced Italian manager, who had previously retired after managing Cagliari last season, was lured back to his beloved former club. Pietro Chiodi, Ranieri’s agent, shed light on the details behind this decision and the swift negotiations that brought him to the Stadio Olimpico.
How the deal was sealed
Ranieri’s return was finalized after close collaboration with Roma’s ownership, the Friedkin family, and their management team. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Chiodi described the negotiations as smooth and efficient, with a strong connection forming quickly between Ranieri and the Friedkins.
“There was immediate empathy with the Friedkins,” Chiodi remarked. He revealed that initial talks took place in London after an earlier meeting in Rome. Roma’s sports director played a pivotal role in aligning ideas and laying the groundwork for the deal. “An agreement was found immediately with Ghisolfi and later ratified by lawyer Vitali,” Chiodi said, emphasizing the professionalism of the club’s structure.
A return born out of loyalty
Ranieri’s agent explained that the Italian manager had been selective about offers since stepping away from management. “He said he would only return to the field for Cagliari, Roma, or a national team. But to Roma in particular, he would never have said no,” Chiodi shared.
This loyalty to the Giallorossi, where Ranieri had a previous spell as manager, proved decisive. Despite receiving multiple offers from clubs in Italy and abroad, none could sway him – except Roma. Chiodi described Ranieri’s return as inevitable given his deep ties to the club.
A Tough road ahead
Roma currently sit 12th in the Serie A standings and urgently need a turnaround. Ranieri faces a daunting debut fixture against Napoli, a side challenging for the league title. With the Friedkins’ unwavering support and the manager’s deep commitment to the club, hopes are high that Ranieri can restore the Giallorossi to their former glory.
