Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Morgan Rogers in a deal worth £117 million, with the England international now expected to undergo a medical before completing his move to Stamford Bridge. Arsenal had identified the Aston Villa playmaker as their leading target for the summer transfer window, but the player has opted to join Chelsea instead.
The Blues had tracked Rogers for an extended period and moved decisively to secure the transfer, leaving their London rivals empty-handed. The attacking midfielder is currently away with England at the World Cup, where he featured in Wednesday’s semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The transfer will establish a new record fee for an English player, surpassing the £116 million Manchester City agreed to pay for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. Rogers will also become Chelsea’s most expensive signing, overtaking the £107 million spent on Enzo Fernandez following a previous World Cup.
A long-term contract awaits after World Cup
Chelsea are expected to hand the 23-year-old a six-year contract, with the club retaining the option to extend the agreement by a further 12 months.
Capable of operating as a central attacking midfielder or on either wing, Rogers demonstrated his versatility during England’s World Cup campaign, including his appearance on the flank against Argentina in the semi-finals.
His future was always expected to become clearer once England’s involvement at the tournament came to an end.
Villa’s profit as Arsenal turn to alternatives
Rogers arrives at Chelsea following an outstanding campaign with Aston Villa, where he contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions. He also collected UEFA’s Europa League Player of the Season award after scoring and providing an assist in Villa’s 3-0 final victory over Freiburg in Istanbul.
The transfer represents a substantial financial return for Villa, who signed the midfielder from Middlesbrough two years ago for approximately £8 million.
For Arsenal, it marks another disappointment in the transfer market after previously losing out on Jeremy Monga, who chose Manchester City instead. The Gunners have responded by moving closer to the signing of Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, with a deal worth around £33.8 million nearing completion as they seek a replacement for Leandro Trossard following his move to Besiktas.
