Good news for Chelsea fans as Christopher Nkunku and Malo Gusto are set to return to the squad ahead of their Liverpool clash.
The Blues will face the Reds in the Premier League on 31 January at Anfield as they continue to chase a top seven finish.
The Stamford Bridge outfit have battled with injuries all season long and are hoping to navigate a tricky Liverpool fixture with two key players who are recovering from injury.
Nkunku and Gusto are set for a return to the squad according to manager Mauricio Pochettino, which bolsters their chances of earning a good result. The last outing between both teams produced one of the more entertaining matches of the season and the added depth that Nkunku and Gusto will provide can help fans relive that game.
Pochettino has also confirmed that Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson will return for the game.
Jackson has been away on international duty with Senegal as they attempted to defend their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title in Ivory Coast. The Teranga Lions were knocked out by hosts Ivory Coast on penalties in their round of 16 fixture, ending their defence early.
Jackson has since returned to London and could be included in the Blues’ matchday squad to face Liverpool.
“It’s good news that I think Malo Gusto and Christoph [Nkunku] can be involved in the squad for [Anfield]”, he said. “They will travel with us and the team, that is the good news. Always, we are waiting for the last moment in case there is some surprise, but it is good news to have two players recovered to play.”
“Then, maybe or not, Nico can arrive for tomorrow and also be involved in the game. But that is if he can arrive in time from the tournament.”
Pochettino also gave injury updates on Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah. The former has enjoyed a good run of games this season but the latter has not. However, the latter remains a good option to have on the bench.
Pochettino pointed out that both players will be unfit for the trip.
“Levi is out. He suffered a minor injury in his tendon. He’s getting better and it’s not a big issue but he is going to be out for tomorrow”, the Argentine manager said.
“Trevoh is really close, he is doing so well. I think it’s only a matter of time until he is going to be involved again, but he is doing really well.”
