Chelsea eye sale of another player despite shut transfer window

The Blues could seal another sale in September despite the transfer window being shut, according to reports.

Chelsea’s transfer strategy is one that has raised eyebrows in recent seasons but the club continues to carry on with their methods. They keep acquiring young talents who may never make any meaningful appearances for them only to get rid of them unceremoniously.

The latest on this list is David Datro Fofana, who spent last season on loan at Burnley. The young Cote d’Ivoire striker joined the Blues from Swedish side Molde in 2022 but spent that season on loan in Germany with Union Berlin before returning to Chelsea and then moving to Burnley.

He impressed in both clubs but those performances are apparently not enough for the club, who are now seeking to move him on permanently. They are in luck thanks to the transfer window in several European nations still open else they would have waited for January to find him a new club.

AEK Athens in Greece are the club who have been fingered with an interest in the 21-year-old. Both clubs are in talks over the player’s transfer to Greece but they both understand that they have limited time to complete the deal.

Wednesday is their summer transfer window deadline and whatever happens must happen before then, according to reports. Chelsea are unlikely to recoup anything close to the €10 million they paid Molde for the player but reports indicate that they are closer to reaching a deal than they were when the Greek side first tabled an offer for the out-of-favour striker.

All of this is in the wake of what seems to be an ownership tussle between Todd Boehly and his Clearlake Capital partners. Sky Sports claims that Boehly wants to buy out Behdad Egbali from the club but the Iranian-American billionaire is unwilling to part ways with his shares.

Clearlake owns the majority of shares with 61.5 percent control but Boehly is looking to return the Blues to a single owner system like under previous owner Roman Abramovich.

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol reports: “Todd Boehly is determined to press ahead with plans to buy control of Chelsea even though majority owners Clearlake have no intention of selling their 61.5% stake.

“Investors have approached Boehly in the past month to offer to provide the funds to buy out Clearlake. They believe their offer would be so compelling it would have to be considered by Clearlake’s investors.

“The decision on whether to accept or reject any bid would be made by Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano.

“Despite Boehly refusing to take no for an answer, Clearlake are confident they will continue to be Chelsea’s majority owners in the long term and have completely ruled out selling any shares.”
