A police inquiry in Brazil into allegations of domestic violence against Manchester United winger Antony has ended without charges being filed. However, the case may still be reviewed by prosecutors for further examination.
The 24-year-old footballer, who has denied all accusations, is also being investigated by Greater Manchester Police. Allegations were brought forward by three women in September of last year, although Antony has not been arrested or charged in either the UK or Brazil.
Antony’s legal team released a statement confirming the closure of the police inquiry in São Paulo. The statement reads, “The defence of Antony Matheus dos Santos confirms that the investigation at the fifth Women’s Defense Precinct of São Paulo Civil Police has been concluded with no charges brought against him.” His lawyers expressed confidence in his innocence and highlighted that the confidential investigation would ultimately clear his name.
Prosecutor review still possible
Despite the closure of the police investigation without charges, Brazilian authorities confirmed that the matter has not been fully dismissed. The prosecutor’s office is currently reviewing the case and may choose to conduct a separate investigation. Antony’s legal team maintains that the lack of police indictment is a positive development for their client.
Antony’s legal troubles began when Brazilian media outlet UOL published claims made by his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin during the international break in September 2023. She alleged that Antony assaulted her, accusations which the footballer strongly denies. Following this, two other women, Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana, also came forward with similar accusations, alleging incidents in 2022. Antony has rejected these allegations as well.
Greater Manchester Police became involved after one of the accusations reportedly took place at a Manchester hotel. Antony was placed on paid leave by Manchester United on 10 September to address the situation but resumed training in late September after voluntarily cooperating with the police in Manchester. He returned to competitive action in early October.
Manchester United has consistently stated that they take the allegations seriously. Club manager Erik ten Hag acknowledged in January that the situation has impacted Antony’s performances on the field. Despite the ongoing investigations, the footballer continues to play for the club, while maintaining his innocence.
