Bournemouth have confirmed the arrival of Alvaro Rodriguez from Elche in a transfer that could reach £25.7 million. The forward has signed a five-year contract, with the announcement coinciding with his 22nd birthday.
The Cherries believe the Uruguay youth international will bring a stronger physical dimension to their attacking options while increasing competition alongside Evanilson. His arrival comes as the club prepares for its first European campaign after securing qualification for the Europa League.
Rodriguez is also eligible to represent Spain at the international level. As part of the agreement completed when Elche signed him from Real Madrid last summer, the Spanish giants will receive half of any future transfer fee involving the striker.
A strong campaign earned Bournemouth’s attention
The new Bournemouth forward impressed in La Liga last season, registering seven goals and five assists across 34 appearances for Elche.
Interest in Rodriguez had been building for some time. New head coach Marco Rose had previously identified the striker as a target, while Bournemouth’s recruitment team had also monitored his progress before deciding to complete the deal.
The move reflects the club’s intention to strengthen its attacking department ahead of a demanding campaign that will include domestic and European competition.
The transfer is not connected to Kroupi situation
Bournemouth’s decision to recruit Rodriguez is not linked to the future of teenage forward Junior Kroupi, despite reports connecting the youngster with a possible departure.
Instead, the club’s current plans are understood to focus on moving Turkey international Enes Unal, while Rodriguez has been brought in to add depth and another option in attack rather than replace an existing young talent.
Birthday move fulfils Premier League ambition
Rodriguez described the transfer as a special moment, saying it was a privilege to join Bournemouth and reveal the move on his birthday.
The striker explained that playing in the Premier League had been a lifelong ambition and admitted he found it difficult to believe Bournemouth’s interest when his agent first informed him.
Looking ahead, Rodriguez said every stage of his career so far has prepared him for this opportunity, adding that he is determined to continue developing during the next chapter of his career in England.
