Boban exits UEFA in protest against Ceferin’s rule shift

In 2016, Aleksander Ceferin assumed the presidency of UEFA, succeeding Michel Platini, and initiated several reforms, including a three-term limit for executive appointments. Ceferin’s commitment to this principle was clear as he campaigned on a reform platform, emphasizing that no president should serve more than three terms in office. His current term is set to conclude in 2027.

Controversial move sparks criticism from former players and executives

However, a recent development has stirred controversy within the football community. Ceferin and his supporters are actively pushing for an amendment to the three-term limit rule, allowing him to remain in power until 2031. Former Croatia midfielder and UEFA’s Football Board chairman, Boban, expressed his disapproval, labeling the move as “beyond comprehension.” Boban highlighted the irony that Ceferin himself proposed reforms in 2017 to prevent such extensions, aiming to protect UEFA and European football from what he referred to as the ‘bad governance’ prevalent in the ‘old system’ of football governance.

UEFA executive committee member David Gill, a former Manchester United chief executive, also voiced his concerns at a recent meeting. Gill argued that the move could tarnish UEFA’s reputation. Despite the criticism, it appears that the amendment may be ratified at the upcoming congress in Paris, potentially paving the way for Ceferin’s re-election in 2027.

Boban resigns from UEFA amid disagreement

Zvonimir Boban, known for chairing UEFA’s new Football Board, which included esteemed figures like Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Gareth Southgate, announced his resignation in response to the proposed amendment. Expressing deep concern and disapproval, Boban stated that Ceferin does not acknowledge any legal, moral, or ethical issues with the proposed changes. He emphasized that his departure was not an attempt to be a hero but a principled stance against compromising the values he believes in. Boban acknowledged the positive collaboration over the past three years but expressed sorrow at having no option but to leave UEFA. The disagreement over the proposed rule changes has added a layer of tension within European football’s governing body.
