Birmingham break Football League points record

Birmingham City set a new Football League points record with a composed 2-0 victory away at Blackpool. Goals from Ethan Laird and Alfie May ensured the League One champions moved to 108 points, overtaking Reading’s 2005-06 Championship record of 106. The result also extended Birmingham’s own third-tier benchmark, having passed Wolves’ previous record of 103 points last week.

Their win over Blackpool marked the club’s 33rd league success of the season and their 14th on the road – surpassing the previous away record of 13, achieved in 1984-85. With one match remaining against Cambridge United, Birmingham now has the opportunity to close the campaign with 111 points.

There was no sign of complacency from the Blues, who had celebrated their earlier milestone at St Andrew’s. They handled the trip to Bloomfield Road with confidence, despite facing their former manager, Steve Bruce. Laird’s header from a Marc Leonard corner gave them the lead six minutes before the break. May then struck his 17th of the season shortly after halftime, sealing the result.

Davies praises historic season

Head coach Chris Davies hailed the magnitude of the team’s achievement, emphasizing the broader significance of the milestone. He highlighted the unique place the squad now holds in football history, noting the sheer number of teams and seasons in English football that have come and gone without reaching such a points total.

Davies urged his players to reflect on what they had done, stressing that this record would not go unnoticed. He also pointed to the demanding nature of the English and Scottish football calendars, saying his team had played more matches than most.

Bruce acknowledges superior opponents

Blackpool boss Steve Bruce, who previously managed Birmingham, admitted there was a clear difference in quality between the two sides. He praised Birmingham’s depth, structure, and consistency throughout the campaign, adding that he had predicted their dominance months earlier.

Bruce compared the current Blues team to the strong Wolverhampton Wanderers side that succeeded in the Championship in recent years. While disappointed with his own team’s first-half performance, he credited Birmingham’s superiority and acknowledged their deserved status as runaway champions.
