Bayern Munich reach agreement for Luis Diaz from Liverpool

Luis Diaz is on the verge of becoming a Bayern Munich player after the German club reached an agreement with Liverpool worth €75 million (£65.5 million), including performance-related bonuses. Earlier in the transfer window, Bayern had seen an initial offer of £58.6 million turned down by the Premier League side.

The Colombian international was not part of Liverpool’s squad during their 4-2 loss to AC Milan in a pre-season game in Hong Kong, amid growing speculation about his departure. The forward has now been cleared to leave Asia and travel to Europe, where he will undergo a medical examination in the coming days.

Diaz’s time at Liverpool

Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 in a deal that initially cost £37 million. Since his arrival, he has made 148 appearances for the club and found the net 41 times. He was instrumental in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last season, contributing 13 goals.

The 2024-25 season proved to be his most productive, scoring 17 times across all competitions. That period also saw Diaz achieve his best shot conversion rate in the Premier League at 18.3%. He nearly broke into the top 10 for combined goals and assists (18) and featured prominently in key attacking metrics including 30 shots on target, 56 chances created, and 52 successful dribbles.

Bayern’s reinforcements and Diaz’s impact

Bayern Munich, who secured their 34th Bundesliga crown by scoring a league-leading 99 goals, are making moves to strengthen their frontline. The German champions were eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals and exited the domestic cup in the round of 16.

Diaz will help fill the gap left by Jamal Musiala, who is facing a lengthy absence after suffering a broken leg and a dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup. His offensive output and relentless work rate made him a valuable asset for Liverpool, particularly evident in his defensive contributions—winning possession in the final third 22 times, more than any of his teammates on a per-minute basis.

In preparation for this transfer, Liverpool have already secured the signings of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, and continue to show interest in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
