Bayern Munich dominance at risk after loss to RB Leipzig in Bundesliga fixture

Bayern Munich are in danger of losing the Bundesliga title after falling at home to Red Bull Leipzig in a potential title deciding game.

Der Rekordmeister have held on to the German top flight title for 10 straight seasons despite the quality in the league. Their struggles in the 2022/23 season not only led to a managerial change during the March international break, but could lead to them losing their dominance in Germany’s football scene.

It is a sight that excites neutrals and frankly, most of the teams in the Bundesliga, who have fallen victim to the Bavarians’ historical and financial might many times in the past.

Bayern have constantly taken the best players from several clubs in the league, made them even better and kept the others away from the league title. They have also monopolised most of the titles in the country as well as the personal awards. Six of the last nine Torjaegerkannone trophies for the league’s highest goal scorer have gone to a Bayern player.

This season, however, Leipzig has done the impossible to increase the odds of Bayern losing the league title.

While they will not be lifting it, Borussia Dortmund could. The Westfalenstadion outfit is one point behind Bayern and a win in their game against Augsburg on Sunday could see them go two points clear with one game to go for the title.

Leipzig travelled to the Allianz Arena on Saturday hoping to seal their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League group stages.

The night began on a sour note as Serge Gnabry put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute. The first half would end on that note, but Marco Rose’s side would fight back in the second half to get an equaliser through Konrad Laimer, who is reportedly on the transfer radar of Bayern Munich.

Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szoboszlai would score two penalties to complete the comeback and help seal third place as well as a ticket to the Champions League next season for Leipzig.

Nkunku, who is leaving for Chelsea in the summer, would be happy to get one over Thomas Tuchel, who forced him out of Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.

The Bundesliga will now go down to the wire as Dortmund would need to win their Sunday game against Augsburg and their last fixture against Mainz to officially lay claim to the title.

Bayern still have skin in the game as a win on their last day against FC Koln could also help them with their eleventh straight title to further exert their dominance.
