Bayer Leverkusen secures Alejo Sarco on free transfer

Bayer Leverkusen has officially announced the signing of 18-year-old striker Alejo Sarco from Argentine club Vélez Sarsfield. The young forward joins on a four-and-a-half-year deal, committing his future to the Bundesliga champions until 2029.

Sarco’s journey to the BayArena

Leverkusen had previously attempted to secure Sarco’s services during the summer transfer window. However, Vélez Sarsfield blocked the move, opting instead to demote the forward to their reserve squad and exclude him from first-team action.

Now free from his contract with Vélez, Sarco has made the highly anticipated switch to Germany. Speaking about his new chapter, the Argentine expressed his excitement about joining Leverkusen, highlighting the club’s impressive performance last season and the opportunity to contribute his skills to an already strong team.

Strengthening Leverkusen’s attack

Sarco’s arrival adds depth to Leverkusen’s forward line, which includes Patrik Schick and Victor Boniface, who is set to return soon from injury. While the exact timeline for Sarco’s integration into the first team remains uncertain, his signing demonstrates Leverkusen’s intent to solidify their squad as they aim to defend their Bundesliga crown.

The move also continues Leverkusen’s history of recruiting talent from South America. Previous signings such as Exequiel Palacios, Piero Hincapié, and Lucas Alario have made notable contributions at the BayArena, setting a positive precedent for Sarco’s future with the club.

Looking ahead

Leverkusen will resume their Bundesliga campaign on January 10th with a challenging match against Borussia Dortmund. As they maintain their pursuit of Bayern Munich in the title race, Sarco’s addition provides another option for coach Xabi Alonso to consider as the season progresses.
