Atlético set to clean up after Barcelona again with agreement to sign defender in the summer

Barcelona are set to supply Atlético with another ex-player after reports emerged that Marcos Alonso has reached an agreement to sign Marcos Alonso in the summer.

Alonso joined the Blaugrana in the 2022/23 season after six successful seasons at Chelsea and was a dependable player in their run-up to the LaLiga title. However, he has struggled for fitness and game time this season with a back injury which has kept him out of the team for three months.

In that time, other players have risen to prominence, leaving no room for his comeback.

He is currently in the last stages of his recovery but it is uncertain if he will play for the club again this season. Whatever happens, it is now certain that the former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland man will be leaving Catalonia this summer.

His destination is already settled, however, as reports have emerged about Atléti having contacted his entourage over a free transfer.

He is set to join Memphis Depay, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann, Thiago Motta, and his father Marcos Alonso II among others as players who have moved from Barcelona to Atlético in their careers.

Los Colchoneros have made a habit of signing free agents in recent windows. However, their agreement with Alonso is still a gentleman’s agreement as both options are exploring multiple options ahead of the summer.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are uncertain about the renewal of Sergi Roberto’s contract.

Their captain, who made his debut in 2010, has played over 300 games for the club in a span of 14 years. He is one of their most dependable players thanks to his versatility which allows him to play as a DM, CM (his natural position), CB, fullback, winger and a false 9.

Despite these qualities, he has never really managed to nail down a starting position in his 14 years at the club. However, he was deemed very important to let go.

With Xavi’s imminent departure from the club, there are reports of Roberto following suit, being the last of the old guard. His recent performances are making a case for his continuity, however, which will help him achieve his dream of retiring at the club of his life.

This would see him enjoy even more fulfilment than the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta and even Xavi Hernandez.

Other players who could leave the club along with Alonso and Roberto are Oriol Romeu, Pablo Torre, Clement Lenglet and Eric Garcia.
