Atalanta looking for long-term deal for Gasperini

Atalanta have confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League after sealing a top-four finish in Serie A. The decisive victory over Roma ensured their qualification with two matches still to play. As they prepare to face Genoa in their second-to-last game of the campaign, the club’s attention has now shifted toward preparations for the upcoming season.

A central topic in their planning is the future of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. After nearly a decade at the helm, his long-term role in Bergamo remains uncertain despite his existing deal running until June 2026.

Coach’s uncertain commitment despite historic achievements

Gasperini took charge of Atalanta in the summer of 2016, during a time when the club frequently fluctuated between Italy’s top two divisions. Under his guidance, Atalanta have reached new heights, including a Europa League title, a Coppa Italia Final appearance, and consistent Champions League participation.

Although the club is eager to retain him, the 67-year-old manager has expressed reluctance to extend his current agreement. Reports indicate that a one-year extension to 2027 would likely fall short of his expectations, as he is seeking assurances for a more ambitious and sustained vision.

Contract talks and interest from other clubs

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Atalanta may attempt to persuade Gasperini with a proposal extending through June 2028, paired with promises of significant investment in the squad. With greater depth, the club believes it could go beyond a top-four finish and potentially mount a more serious title challenge, as they did briefly this season alongside Inter and Napoli.

Meanwhile, other teams are monitoring the situation closely. Roma, in particular, are reported to be considering the veteran coach as Claudio Ranieri prepares to step away from the game. Whether Gasperini stays or moves on could depend on how Atalanta present their long-term ambitions in the coming weeks.
