Aston Villa could be forced to sell key player in the summer

Aston Villa may have to sell an important player in the summer after losing close to £120million last year, a report has revealed.

The 4th placed club posted losses of £119.6m for the year, May 30, 2023, with the next accounting period expected to be projected at the end of June this year….

According to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR), clubs are only allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million over a three-year period. Losses exceeding this amount may result in several penalties with point’s deduction among the possible punishments.

Likely players that could be sold

Midfielders Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey are expected to be targets for rival teams this summer, as Mail Sport reported on March 1. Since Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, John McGinn, and other important attackers have signed new contracts since the beginning of 2023, Villa is unlikely to consider offers for either Leon Bailey or Ollie Watkins.

Villa made a total of £40 million via the sale of homegrown players Cameron Archer, Aaron Ramsey (Jacob’s younger brother), and Jaden Philogene last summer. This amount can be deposited as pure profit in accordance with PSR regulations.

Newcastle expressed interest in Jacob, an academy product valued at approximately £50 million, in January.

Another potential transfer option was Boubacar Kamara, a Frenchman who signed for free in the summer of 2022 and might fetch a price of over £50 million. However, the player won’t be ready until the autumn due to a significant knee injury.

With a potential Champions League campaign coming up, manager Unai Emery is eager to bolster this group at the end of the season, but he may have to make concessions in the transfer market. This could also see Villa with a much reduced transfer budget compared to last summer.

With a further boost under Emery, Villa’s wage bill has also increased since Steven Gerrard took over for Dean Smith in the autumn of 2021. Promising performers such as Lucas Digne who is among the top earners is among those who might depart this summer.

“It is important to note that these figures are in line with the strategic business plan, and we continue to operate within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules”, via Villa  statement.

“The owners of Aston Villa remain committed to the long-term and sustainable development of the Club, and we look forward to continued progress on the delivery of our strategic plan.”
