Arne Slot сriticizes Darwin Nunez’s work-rate

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed dissatisfaction with Darwin Nunez’s recent performances, citing a drop in his usual intensity. The Uruguayan striker was brought on as a substitute in matches against Wolves and Aston Villa but did not feature in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

Nunez, who squandered a clear chance against Villa, was defended by Slot at the time, but the Dutch coach now admits that the forward’s attitude on the pitch has been an issue. Slot believes that while missing opportunities is understandable, a player must still contribute fully to the team’s effort.

Two consecutive matches below expectations

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming fixture against Newcastle, Slot acknowledged that he had supported Nunez after his costly miss against Villa but was more concerned with his overall contribution. The manager noted that Nunez’s work ethic in the Wolves and Villa matches did not meet his usual standards.

“I helped him by saying that missing chances is part of the game,” Slot stated. “I wasn’t only critical of him. However, for the second game in a row, I wasn’t satisfied with his effort.”

Slot emphasized that a lack of commitment is not something he can tolerate. He admitted that while an off-game can happen, seeing a similar issue in back-to-back matches required him to address the matter.

Nunez’s response in training

The Liverpool boss pointed out that Nunez is known for his relentless work-rate, which has made him a fan favorite. Slot stated that he did not believe Nunez was completely neglecting his responsibilities but was not displaying the same intensity that supporters admire.

“If you miss a big chance, you have to keep fighting for the team,” Slot said. “I’m not saying he wasn’t trying at all, but it wasn’t the Darwin that everyone loves – mainly because of how hard he usually works.”

Despite his recent struggles, Nunez delivered an impressive training session on Monday. Slot praised his response, indicating that the striker is eager to regain his form and return to his usual energetic style of play.
