Arne Slot: Mo Salah not for sale despite contract talks

Mohamed Salah has gotten off to a flying start in the Premier League, maintaining an eight-season run since transferring from AS Roma.

The Egyptian has been one of the league’s best players since that fateful move, officially putting to bed the “Chelsea flop” comments which he had to deal with after his failure to make it at Stamford bridge before his transfer to the Italian Serie A.

This season, he is only behind Erling Haaland in goal contributions with three goals and three assists which have helped Liverpool keep pace with Manchester City and their perfect start to the season. Salah looks poised for another record season which can only be eclipsed this time around by Haaland.

Liverpool fans are enjoying themselves at the moment but are watching their Egyptian with trepidation thanks to his contract situation.

Salah is in the last year of his contract and was the subject of a Saudi transfer bid last season. He opted to remain at Anfield for his final year but has not signed a new contract or spoken about his future. His representatives and Liverpool are in constant talks over his future while he continues to enjoy himself on the pitch.

Slot was reminded of what he stands to lose if Salah does not sign following Liverpool’s latest triumph in the Premier League. The Reds went to Old Trafford and beat Manchester United 3 – 0 on the road thanks to Mo Salah’s brilliance. He scored one goal and assisted both of Luis Diaz’s goals to Slot’s delight.

Salah himself spoke to the media after the game about the issue. “Honestly, I had a good summer. I had a long time to stay with myself, try to think positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club,” he said. “I just want to enjoy it, I don’t want to think about it but I feel free to play football, we will see next year.”

Addressing the issue after journalists reminded him of Salah’s contract situation and what the Egyptian also said to the media earlier, the Dutchman said, “There’s a lot of ifs there.

“But at the moment he is one of ours and I’m really, really happy with him being one of ours. He plays really well. I don’t talk about contracts from players, but I can talk for hours about how Mo played today.

“He was impressive like in the first two games. But if we talk about an individual you don’t do justice to all the other ones, because today we saw a real good team performance.

“Playing out from the back, a high press, a midfield that keeps on running. All the attention goes to Mo and Lucho but that doesn’t do justice to the other nine and the others who came in.”
