Ancelotti secures first victory as Brazil reach World Cup

Brazil confirmed their place at the 2026 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 success over Paraguay in South American qualifying, delivering Carlo Ancelotti his first triumph in charge.

The decisive goal came in the second half when Vinicius Jr found the net from close range, capitalizing on clever play from Matheus Cunha, who is set to join Manchester United.

It marked Ancelotti’s first win after his debut ended in a goalless draw with Ecuador the previous week. Brazil continue their record of qualifying for every World Cup tournament in history.

“We had to win and qualify,” said Vinicius Jr. “It wasn’t our most impressive display, but what matters is the result. Now the coach has more time to prepare.”

Argentina draw as Ecuador seal qualification

In Buenos Aires, Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia in a lively contest. Luis Diaz gave the visitors the lead with a dazzling solo effort, beating three defenders before scoring past Emiliano Martinez.

Argentina’s challenge became tougher when Enzo Fernandez received a red card for a high challenge on Kevin Castano with 20 minutes left.

Despite being down to ten men, the hosts responded through Thiago Almada, who equalised in the 81st minute. The draw keeps Colombia in a strong position, four points above Venezuela in seventh.

Meanwhile, Ecuador secured their ticket to the 2026 tournament with a 0-0 result against Peru, joining Brazil and Argentina among the qualified nations.
