Amorim dismisses speculation about Fernandes’ future

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has shut down speculation regarding Bruno Fernandes’ potential departure, insisting that the Portuguese midfielder will not leave the club this summer.

The 30-year-old captain, who extended his contract until 2027 last August, has been United’s standout performer this season. Over the weekend, reports surfaced linking Fernandes with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Addressing the rumors ahead of United’s upcoming Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, Amorim was clear in his stance. “No, it’s not going to happen,” he stated in his pre-match press conference. When pressed further on his certainty, he responded with a smile, “He’s not going anywhere because I’ve already told him.”

Fernandes’ influence on United’s season

The attacking midfielder has been instrumental for United, scoring 16 goals across all competitions. His contributions have far exceeded those of his teammates, with no other player in the squad reaching double figures.

Leading up to the last international break, Fernandes hit top form, netting five times in a single week, including a hat-trick in the Europa League last-16 triumph over Real Sociedad.

His overall impact in the Premier League has been remarkable, with 31 combined goals and assists – only trailing behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (54) and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (33).

Despite Fernandes’ efforts, United have struggled in the league, currently sitting in 13th place. They now prepare to face third-placed Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Amorim backs his captain

Amorim, like his predecessor Erik ten Hag, has shown unwavering support for Fernandes, even amid criticism from former United captain Roy Keane.

“I want Bruno here because even in our toughest moments, he…” Amorim began before shifting to a more optimistic tone. “We aim to win the Premier League again, and to do that, we need top players to stay. He may be 30, but he still plays over 50 games a season and consistently delivers at least 30 goal contributions.”

The United boss also emphasized that the club remains in control of Fernandes’ future. “I sense that he is truly happy here. He understands our vision and is fully committed to it.”

Highlighting Fernandes’ passion for the club, Amorim added, “He is a Manchester United supporter himself, so he deeply feels what this club represents. Some people interpret his visible frustration in matches as a negative trait for a captain, but to me, it’s proof of how much he cares. This is exactly the kind of player we want.”
