Alexis Mac Allister reveals squad stance on Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold contract situation

Liverpool and Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed the squad’s position on the Liverpool contract standoff with Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

These three stalwarts of the Anfield army are in the last year of their contracts and are free to enter discussions with the representatives of other clubs to further their careers. The fans are currently at loggerheads with the FSG – Liverpool’s owners – over this and have raised banners at every Liverpool home game to date in support of one or all of these three.

Mac Allister has now joined voices with theirs, while also speaking for the team by subtly calling on the club’s administration to help them by securing the Anfield futures of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold.

Mac Allister told ESPN Argentina: “I think that shows a little bit of who Mo is, his mentality. When you see him every day, he’s a person who works very hard, who is tireless. He’s the first to arrive and the last to leave. Always prepared for whatever may come. He carries that to the pitch and he always helps us in decisive moments when big players get tougher, he’s there. That makes us all glad.

“Obviously we want to share a lot of years with him, but that’s a personal decision. The club has to make a decision and we can’t get involved.

“Hopefully they can come to an agreement because we want him and Virgil and Trent to continue with us. Hopefully that will be the case.”

Meanwhile, Arne Slot has responded to Mo Salah’s comments about Manchester City following their win over the defending champions.

Salah joked that he may not face City again after being asked for updates on his contract situation. His comments were interpreted differently and presented to Slot, who took a sly dig at City’s 115 charges.

“Maybe Mo knows more about the 115 acquisitions [charges] so expects them not to be there in the Premier League next season,” Slot quipped in a news conference on Tuesday ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle United.

“The boring answer is always the same. This is not the place for me to talk about Mo’s contract. It was a joke. I repeat, it was a joke.”

Liverpool will be in action next against Newcastle United and will be looking to continue their dominance in the league while Manchester City and Arsenal – the top two favourites for the league at the beginning of the season – work to get back to winning ways.
