Alexander-Arnold joins Real Madrid and addresses fans in Spanish

Trent Alexander-Arnold described signing for Real Madrid as a “dream come true” during his unveiling in the Spanish capital on Thursday. The 26-year-old, who previously spent his entire career at Liverpool, took the stage at his presentation and delivered a speech in Spanish, expressing both gratitude and excitement.

The right-back was accompanied by his girlfriend, Estelle Behnke, his parents, and brothers as he was introduced to an audience that included Real legend Roberto Carlos. A highlights video showcased his development from a young talent to an established player for club and country. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez welcomed him, stating that one of the best defenders in football was joining the club.

The English international told the crowd he was proud to join a club of Real Madrid’s stature and eager to begin a new chapter. “Thank you very much to President Florentino Perez and Real Madrid for this opportunity,” he said. “I’m here to give everything and win titles, to grow as a player, and to enjoy playing alongside the world’s best.” He later posed with Perez, holding up a Real Madrid jersey with “Trent” and the number 12 instead of his previous Liverpool number 66.

Early move and new chapter in Spain

Although his contract with Liverpool was set to expire on 30 June, Real Madrid opted to pay a fee to release him early in time for the Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold has agreed to a six-year deal with a €1bn (£840m) buyout clause. The club begins their tournament campaign against Al-Hilal in Miami on 18 June.

In a press conference held in English following the ceremony, Alexander-Arnold shared that he had been studying Spanish for several months. He felt it was important to demonstrate commitment and to begin his Madrid career positively. He also said Perez seemed impressed with his effort to speak the language.

The defender leaves Liverpool after 354 appearances, 23 goals, and 86 assists, having joined the club as a child. He played a key role in helping the Reds lift the 2024-25 Premier League trophy under new manager Arne Slot and was part of the squad that won the 2019-20 league title under Jurgen Klopp. Other silverware with Liverpool included the 2018-19 Champions League, the 2022 FA Cup, and two League Cups.

His exit was not without controversy. He was jeered during a home match against Arsenal after announcing his departure, prompting Klopp to later reveal he stopped watching due to the reaction. In contrast, the Anfield crowd offered him a warmer reception during his final match against Crystal Palace.

Influence of Bellingham and Alonso

Alexander-Arnold said Real Madrid was the only club he would consider leaving Liverpool for, calling the decision emotional but right. He confirmed that conversations with England teammate Jude Bellingham had taken place but dismissed the idea that Bellingham was central to the move. Instead, he stressed that Madrid’s reputation was a decisive factor.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, now the manager at Real Madrid, also played a role in Alexander-Arnold’s admiration for the club. Alonso famously scored in Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League comeback against AC Milan. Alexander-Arnold recalled watching Alonso in that final as a fan and described him as an idol who influenced his own playing style, especially his passing.

Though they have only exchanged brief messages so far, the new Madrid defender said he was looking forward to speaking further with Alonso about his expectations. “It’s special to now work with someone who shaped how I see the game,” he said.
