Out-of-favour midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, currently on the books of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has emerged as a subject of interest from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, according to a recent report by Sports Zone. The Dutch international, who joined PSG on a free transfer in 2021 after his stint at Liverpool, has found himself surplus to requirements within the French club’s setup.
Despite his notable career at Liverpool, Wijnaldum struggled to make a significant impact during his time in the French capital. With 38 appearances for PSG, he managed to secure three goals and as many assists. A pivotal moment during his tenure was a season-long loan to AS Roma, which was unfortunately marred by a significant setback. Wijnaldum suffered a tibia fracture last summer, leading to a substantial amount of missed playtime alongside his teammates under the management of José Mourinho.
Uncertain Future and Interest from Al-Ettifaq
As the conclusion of his loan spell with AS Roma arrived, Georginio Wijnaldum has returned to PSG, where he remains tied to a contract that extends until 2024. In an unexpected turn, he now finds himself training with PSG’s group of “undesirables,” a situation indicating his current standing within the club. Reports reveal that Wijnaldum proposed an early termination of his contract, a proposition which PSG declined, instead assigning a €6 million price tag for any potential suitor interested in securing his services.
Sports Zone’s latest update suggests that Al-Ettifaq, under the management of Steven Gerrard and featuring former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson as a marquee signing this summer, has expressed keen interest in Wijnaldum’s abilities. Notably, the Saudi Arabian club is eyeing the Dutch midfielder as a potential addition on a free transfer, indicating a willingness to acquire him without a transfer fee. Other clubs such as PSV and Al-Shabab are also reportedly monitoring Wijnaldum’s situation as he navigates this pivotal point in his career.
