There may be panic in the air at Manchester United, but Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero believes that they are on the right track.
Aguero spent a decade on the blue side of Manchester in which he contributed greatly towards tilting the balance of power.
Now, despite their history, Manchester United look like also-rans when pitted side by side with Manchester City.
Every season looks like City’s while United fans, pundits and journalists speculate on many things including the safety of the club’s manager at the time.
This season is no different. However, there is a slight tilt to it. Manchester City are sat in fourth place after a poor five game run in the Premier League while United are in seventh place.
United’s position, while scandalous, is expected but City’s is not. However, there are only a few who are ruling the current Premier League title holders out of the race.
Aguero is one of those backing his former team to retain the title, for obvious reasons. However, he has also expressed a strange sentiment by claiming that City’s neighbours will mount a challenge for the title.
“You can never sleep on Man United at this stage of the season. They are one of the biggest threats to Man City’s Premier League title.” Aguero told Stake.com.
Aguero may have made the comment based on how both clubs have often battled to the death. His first season at the Etihad is the biggest example of this battle.
With the league going down to the wire, Aguero would score a late winner that gave City their first ever Premier League title, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat and preventing Manchester United from winning it in their own game that took place simultaneously on the last day of the 2011/12 season.
He may be wrong this time around, however, because Man United do not look like challengers. However, they will appreciate the sentiment and could be spurred by it, especially after they became the first side to keep a clean sheet at Anfield against Liverpool this season.
Aguero also praised Ange Postecoglou for his work at Tottenham Hotspur in such a short span.
“I also think Tottenham are title contenders, who have improved a lot under Ange Postecoglou,” he said.
Then he praised Eddie Howe and Newcastle for their doggedness despite their own ups and downs this season.
“Even despite their ups and downs, Newcastle are also in with a chance of the title as they always put up a fight,” Aguero added.
It remains to be seen if Aguero’s predictions come true. May 2024 is only a few months away.
