Phil Foden has committed his future to Manchester City by signing a new four-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2030. His previous agreement had been due to expire next summer, but the England midfielder has chosen to extend his stay as the club begins a new era under head coach Enzo Maresca.
The 26-year-old has spent his entire senior career at City after making his first-team debut at the age of 17 under Pep Guardiola. Since then, he has amassed 369 appearances and helped the club secure six Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy, and two FA Cups.
Foden extends Manchester City stay under Enzo Maresca
Foden said remaining at Manchester City means everything to him, describing representing the club as the only thing he has ever wanted. He also stressed that wearing the City shirt continues to be an honour.
The midfielder reflected on the success he has experienced during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history but insisted the focus remains on winning more trophies in the future rather than dwelling on previous achievements.
Foden also welcomed the chance to reunite with Maresca, who served as Guardiola’s assistant during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign. He praised the Italian’s influence, saying he was respected by the squad and enjoyed by the players during that successful season.
Phil Foden performances and changing role at Manchester City
Foden’s entire Manchester City career until now came under Guardiola, whose decade-long spell as manager ended in May. Alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva, Foden is the club’s most decorated player.
Across the last six seasons, Foden has been one of only three Premier League players to score at least 10 goals in all competitions every year, alongside Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins.
His most productive campaign came in the season following City’s Treble, when he delivered 27 goals and 12 assists. However, his attacking output has declined over the past two seasons as his responsibilities within the team have changed.
With Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo providing pace from wide positions and Rayan Cherki frequently operating as the attacking midfielder, Foden was often used in a deeper role, reducing his opportunities to score and create decisive chances.
England World Cup omission follows difficult season
Foden finished last season with seven goals and five assists in 33 Premier League appearances. In the previous campaign, he also scored seven league goals while contributing two assists across 28 matches.
His inconsistent form resulted in him being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup in May after making only 23 Premier League starts during the season.
The Professional Footballers’ Association suggested the demanding football calendar had affected the midfielder, stating he had not performed at the same level shown two years earlier.
