Mexico wrapped up the group phase with another victory, defeating the Czech Republic in Mexico City and maintaining a 100% record at the tournament. The co-hosts had already secured top spot in the group before kick-off thanks to earlier wins over South Africa and South Korea.
Having already guaranteed first place, head coach Javier Aguirre used the occasion to make several changes to his starting XI. Five new players were introduced, including left-back Mateo Chavez, who rewarded his manager’s faith by scoring his first goal for the national team shortly after the interval.
The result confirmed Mexico’s dominance in the section, while the Czech Republic’s World Cup journey came to an end. The Europeans finished at the bottom of Group A with a single point collected from three matches.
Young talents make the difference
Among the players handed an opportunity from the start was Gilberto Mora, who produced an impressive display in midfield. The teenager played a key role in Mexico’s second goal, initiating the move that eventually led to Julian Quinones finding the net.
Mora’s through ball released Jorge Sanchez, whose initial effort was stopped by goalkeeper Matej Kovar. However, the situation quickly developed into a scramble inside the six-yard box before Quinones reacted fastest to convert the loose ball and register his second goal of the competition.
At 17 years and 253 days old, Mora became the sixth-youngest footballer ever to start a men’s World Cup match. He also set a new mark as the youngest player to start a World Cup game for Mexico.
The youngster received a warm reception from the crowd when he left the field after 72 minutes. His replacement, Alvaro Fidalgo, later added a third goal with a precise finish from 15 yards into the top corner.
Memorable moments at Azteca Stadium
While the goals delighted the home supporters, one of the biggest ovations of the evening was reserved for veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa when he entered the match late on.
The 40-year-old is taking part in his sixth World Cup campaign, matching the total number of tournament appearances achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Despite that milestone, Ochoa has only featured on the pitch in four editions, having remained an unused squad member during the 2006 and 2010 tournaments.
Mexico will now remain in Mexico City for their next fixture, where they are scheduled to face one of the eight best third-place teams in the last 32. The match is set to take place at 02:00 BST on Wednesday, 1 July.
For the Czech Republic, meanwhile, the defeat marked the conclusion of their participation in the tournament after a difficult group-stage campaign.
