Croatia boosted their chances of reaching the World Cup last 32 after securing a 1-0 success against Panama in Toronto and collecting their first points in Group L. The result leaves Zlatko Dalic’s side in a strong position ahead of their final group fixture against Ghana.
Following Ghana’s earlier goalless draw with England, Croatia know that a victory on Saturday will guarantee progression to the knockout rounds. For Panama, however, the defeat ended any possibility of advancing after consecutive losses in the competition.
Tactical changes transform the contest
Panama caused difficulties during the opening half, particularly through the speed of their attacking players, and Croatia struggled to find their rhythm before the interval. Neither side managed to break the deadlock before the break.
Dalic responded by introducing two attack-minded substitutions at half-time, seeking a greater threat in the final third. The adjustments quickly produced the desired effect.
Just nine minutes after the restart, one of the substitutes made the decisive contribution. Ante Budimir finished calmly at the far post after meeting a low delivery from Josip Stanisic, providing the only goal of the encounter.
Landmark appearance for Modric
The victory provided an ideal outcome for captain Luka Modric, who marked his 200th appearance for Croatia with a win. The midfielder became only the fourth male footballer to reach that international milestone.
Competing in his fifth World Cup at the age of 40, Modric once again demonstrated his influence in midfield. Before leaving the field after 81 minutes, he completed 88% of his passes.
That performance continued a remarkable record at the tournament, with the Croatian veteran maintaining a pass-completion rate above 80% in each of his 19 World Cup appearances. After the final whistle, teammates lifted him into the air as they celebrated both the victory and his achievement.
Livaković preserves narrow advantage
Although Croatia held the lead for much of the second half, Panama remained a threat and created opportunities to force an equaliser that could have kept their World Cup campaign alive.
Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic played a crucial role in protecting the advantage. During a hectic spell shortly before the second-half hydration break, he produced several important saves to deny the Panamanian attack.
Speaking after the match, Dalic praised his captain’s continued importance to the national side. He highlighted Modric’s impact on games and described the achievement of reaching 200 international appearances as something that should be greatly appreciated.
The Croatia coach also noted Modric’s humility, explaining that the midfielder is not someone who seeks major celebrations, while expressing his satisfaction that the landmark occasion was recognised in front of the team’s supporters.
