Bayern Munich took a significant step forward in the Club World Cup with a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors, largely thanks to a standout performance from their captain, Harry Kane. The striker played a part in both goals, showcasing his quality on the big stage. He opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing precisely from ten yards after Bayern applied early pressure.
In the closing stages, with the game level and tensions high, Kane turned provider. Spotting a gap in the Boca defence, he slid the ball through to Michael Olise, who struck decisively from the edge of the box. The former Crystal Palace winger’s cool finish gave Bayern the win and ensured progression to the knockout stage.
Speaking after the match, Kane praised the team’s effort and focus: “We knew it wouldn’t be easy coming here. It was a big performance. It’s great to get on the scoresheet and help the team qualify,” he told Dazn. “This tournament is massive – we’re playing top teams from around the world. But it’s about our level, not the opponent. That’s how we approach it.”
Boca’s fight not over yet
Boca Juniors, who had been on a nine-match unbeaten run in international competition, gave Bayern a tough test and responded well in the second half. Their equaliser came through Miguel Merentiel, who produced a moment of brilliance to cancel out Kane’s opener and raise hopes of a surprise result.
Despite the defeat, Boca’s campaign isn’t over. They still have a mathematical chance of reaching the next round if Benfica lose to Bayern in the final group match and Boca can overcome a seven-goal goal difference. It’s a narrow path, but one that keeps their hopes alive for now.
Injuries and group dynamics
Bayern’s night came with a worrying moment when Jamal Musiala was forced to leave the pitch with an apparent injury. The Germany international had only been on the field for 25 minutes as a substitute before limping off, raising concerns ahead of the knockout rounds.
Elsewhere in the group, Benfica ran riot against Auckland City with a dominant 6-0 win. The Portuguese side are now second in the group standings and will face Bayern next. The result also confirmed Auckland City’s exit from the tournament, having conceded 16 goals across their two opening games.
Bayern now need just a single point from their match against Benfica to secure top position in the group. If Chelsea manage to finish second in their group, a high-profile clash between the German champions and the English side could be on the horizon in the last 16.
