Mathys Tel confident Spurs can overcome struggles

Mathys Tel remains optimistic about Tottenham Hotspur’s ability to turn their season around despite their recent struggles. The 19-year-old forward, who recently joined the club, scored his first goal in Spurs colors during their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round. The loss came just days after Tottenham suffered a heavy defeat against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Manager Ange Postecoglou is under growing pressure as the team battles an ongoing injury crisis that has sidelined numerous key players. First-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, defensive duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and striker Dominic Solanke – who arrived in the summer for £55 million – are among those missing from action.

Tel, brought in on transfer deadline day, believes his teammates possess the quality and mentality to push through the difficult period.

Tel’s first goal amidst tough times

Speaking to club media, Tel reflected on his early days at Spurs and his first goal for the team. “It’s a good start for me, apart from the defeats,” he said. “Playing my first game at Anfield in a semi-final and now making my home debut with a goal is great for my confidence.”

Despite his personal milestone, the young Frenchman acknowledged the disappointment of losing to Aston Villa. “It was a tough game. The opposition played aggressively, and we fought until the end. We know we can do better,” he added. “We have to believe in ourselves and push forward.”

Tel remains committed to the club’s ambitions and trusts in his teammates and coaching staff. “We’re all disappointed with the results, but I have faith in the quality of the squad and staff. I’m not worried about the future,” he said. “We have an important match against Manchester United coming up, and we will do our job.”

Tottenham’s uphill battle for the remainder of the season

With domestic results falling below expectations, Spurs find themselves 14th in the Premier League standings, facing the possibility of their worst league finish in over two decades. The injury crisis has undeniably played a role in their struggles, but Postecoglou remains determined to steer his team back on track as players return to fitness.

Although their FA Cup and Carabao Cup runs have ended, Tottenham still have an opportunity to claim silverware through the Europa League. However, their focus must also remain on improving their league form to avoid further disappointment.

“We need to give more on the pitch,” Tel said. “Our mentality stays strong, and we will fight until the end.”

With key players set to return in the coming weeks, Spurs will be looking to reverse their fortunes and put their early-season woes behind them.
