Bayer Leverkusen push to secure Florian Wirtz’s future

Bayer Leverkusen are making significant efforts to extend the contract of their star midfielder, Florian Wirtz, as they aim to retain him beyond the upcoming summer transfer window. With the 21-year-old attracting interest from elite European clubs, including Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, Leverkusen are eager to ensure he remains part of their squad for the foreseeable future.

Bayern Munich leading the chase

In recent weeks, speculation has intensified around Wirtz’s future, with Bayern Munich reportedly emerging as the frontrunner to secure the German international’s signature. Sources close to the player suggest that Wirtz is leaning towards staying in the Bundesliga, making a move to Bavaria a strong possibility. The midfielder is currently tied to Leverkusen until 2027, but should he opt for a transfer next summer, Bayer would demand a minimum fee of €100 million.

Although interest from top clubs is fierce, Wirtz’s preference to stay within Germany could tip the scales in Bayern’s favor, heightening the likelihood of a domestic transfer.

Leverkusen’s battle to retain Wirtz

Leverkusen, however, are not ready to part with their prized talent just yet. According to recent reports, the club is working tirelessly to extend Wirtz’s contract by at least another year, aiming for an extension until 2028. One key factor in their efforts to keep him is securing Champions League football, a crucial element in convincing Wirtz to stay for at least one more season.

The club’s long-term vision involves holding onto Wirtz until after the 2026 World Cup, believing his value will remain high due to his young age and continued development. Encouragingly for Leverkusen, Wirtz’s father, who serves as his agent, has consistently prioritized his son’s growth over a quick, high-profile move. This approach aligns with the club’s goal of keeping Wirtz for at least another one to two years, providing a glimmer of hope in their efforts to fend off interest from Europe’s top sides.
