Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has brushed aside Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent remarks, saying he remains unfazed by external opinions regarding his team. Speaking on a podcast hosted by his former United teammate Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo criticized Ten Hag for comments made during a pre-season interview, where the Dutchman suggested that United were “far from” challenging for the Premier League title.
While Ronaldo echoed Ten Hag’s assessment that the club was not in a position to win the title, he felt the manager’s words sent the wrong message. In response to the criticism, Ten Hag clarified that Ronaldo essentially agreed with him and that there was no conflict in their views. “He’s entitled to his opinion, and that’s fine,” Ten Hag stated. “He’s far away now, in Saudi Arabia, far from Manchester.”
United’s Injury Concerns Ahead of Southampton Clash
As Manchester United prepare for their upcoming fixture against Southampton, Ten Hag confirmed that the team will be without key players. Left-back Luke Shaw, who has yet to feature for the club this season despite appearing for England during the recent Euro 2024 qualifiers, remains sidelined. Additionally, striker Rasmus Hojlund is unavailable as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during United’s pre-season tour of the United States.
However, there is positive news for the club as new signing Manuel Ugarte is fit for selection. The £50.2 million midfielder from Uruguay returned from international duty on Thursday and is in contention for the match.
Ten Hag Unmoved by Pressure Amid Poor Start
After back-to-back losses against Brighton and Liverpool, Ten Hag is facing increased scrutiny, with some outside observers speculating about his future at the club. If United lose to Southampton, it will mark their worst start to a season since 1986-87. Despite the mounting pressure, Ten Hag remains calm and confident in his approach. He acknowledged that United are still undergoing a transition, integrating younger players into the squad while dealing with injuries.
“I know where we are in the process and what needs to be done,” Ten Hag said. “There are no excuses. We have to win every game, and everyone in the team understands that.”
