Son Heung-min Eyes Legendary Status at Tottenham

Captain Son Heung-min has expressed his desire to be remembered as a Tottenham Hotspur legend but feels he still has more to accomplish before earning that recognition. Now in his 10th season with the club, the 32-year-old has amassed over 500 appearances and formed a prolific attacking duo with Harry Kane before the striker’s move to Bayern Munich last summer.

Reflecting on his time at Spurs, Son emphasized the importance of consistency and contributing to the team’s success. “Staying with one club for a decade is an achievement, but it’s not enough. To truly be considered a legend, I believe you need to give back to the club and win something meaningful,” Son told BBC Sport. “I came here with the aim of lifting a trophy, and I hope this season can be special.”

Tottenham’s last major trophy was the 2008 League Cup, and Son is determined to change that. While his focus remains on helping Spurs achieve silverware, he prefers not to set specific personal targets for the season. “I don’t want to limit myself with a goal count. If I hit that number early on, then the drive might fade. I just want to push myself as hard as I can in all areas – for the team and as an individual.”

Embracing Captaincy and Responsibility

Son took over the Tottenham captaincy in August, succeeding Hugo Lloris, and has embraced the additional duties that come with the role. Despite the challenges, he sees it as a valuable learning experience. “Being a captain in the Premier League carries a lot of responsibility, and I’m still learning every day,” Son admitted. “It’s not always easy, but it’s a role I’m proud to hold.”

The forward also spoke about the leadership style he has adopted, acknowledging that while he isn’t the loudest presence on the pitch, he is prepared to step up when necessary. “I’m not the most vocal guy, but when the situation demands it, I’m more than willing to speak up. What’s important to me is leading by example, showing the right behaviors both on and off the field,” Son explained.

Eyes Set on Future Success

Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League last season, with Son contributing 17 goals to their campaign. Now leading a young and developing squad, the South Korean star remains optimistic about their potential and focused on future achievements. “We have a lot of young talent, and as captain, it’s my job to set a good example. When I do the right things, the rest of the team follows suit,” Son said.

Looking ahead, Son’s primary ambition remains clear: to help Tottenham end their trophy drought. Though he has yet to claim legendary status in his eyes, he believes that with hard work and dedication, this season could bring the success he’s been striving for since he first joined the club.
