Ilkay Gundogan Returns to City After Barcelona Spell

Manchester City have re-signed their former captain Ilkay Gundogan on a one-year contract, with the possibility of extending it for another year. The German midfielder, who first joined City in 2016 as Pep Guardiola’s inaugural signing, left the club in 2023 to join Barcelona on a free transfer. After a successful seven-year spell at the Etihad, where he lifted 14 trophies and netted 60 goals in 304 appearances, Gundogan is back at City after a season in La Liga.

Reflecting on his first stint with City, Gundogan expressed how satisfied he was both on and off the field. “My seven years at Manchester City were filled with joy,” he said. Gundogan captained the club during their historic Treble-winning season in 2023 and emphasized his admiration for Guardiola. “Pep is the best coach in the world, and working under him every day improves you as a player,” he added. Returning to Manchester, he stated, is something he is eager for: “I am excited to wear the City jersey once again.”

Departure From Barcelona Amid Financial Struggles

Despite an impressive debut season with Barcelona, financial pressures at the Spanish club led to Gundogan’s departure after just one year. Barcelona’s difficulties in registering new signing Dani Olmo under La Liga’s financial fair play rules forced the club to make tough decisions, including parting ways with the German midfielder. With Gundogan being one of Barcelona’s top earners, his exit on a free transfer helps the club stay within its financial limits.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Gundogan shared his mixed emotions about leaving Barcelona, acknowledging the tough situation the club faced. He expressed gratitude for his time in Spain and his desire to have continued helping his teammates in the upcoming season. However, he found solace in the fact that his departure could provide some financial relief for the Catalan side. “Although it is difficult to leave, knowing that it helps the club eases the sadness a little,” he wrote.

Guardiola Delighted by Unexpected Reunion

Ahead of City’s upcoming match against Ipswich Town, Pep Guardiola revealed that Gundogan’s return to Manchester was unexpected. According to the City boss, the opportunity to bring back his former captain was a surprise but a welcome one. “It came out of nowhere,” Guardiola admitted, “but we had no hesitation once the chance presented itself. We’re overjoyed to have him back.”

After earning 82 caps for Germany, Gundogan also decided to retire from international football following the team’s exit from Euro 2024. As he re-joins Manchester City, Gundogan will look to continue his successful club career under Guardiola’s guidance, aiming to contribute to another fruitful campaign.
