Manchester United speak on Mason Greenwood’s attempted rape charge

Manchester United have maintained their initial position that Mason Greenwood remains suspended. In a statement released on their official website, the Red Devils said the youngster remains suspended until the outcome of the judicial process.

Manchester United are sweating over the situation with Greenwood. The Manchester United academy graduate was in line for big things at the club but may have lost his way following the criminal charges levelled against him early in the year.

Manchester United continued life without Greenwood but cannot say they do not miss the services of the forward. Before his arrest in January this year, Greenwood had scored five league goals in 18 appearances for the Red Devils. Last season, he managed 12 goals in all competitions from 52 appearances. Until his arrest, Greenwood had only made one international appearance for England. He made his international debut in September 2020.

There was hope on the horizon for Greenwood to return to the Manchester United setup. It has received a massive setback as the academy graduate is back in the hands of the law for violating his bail terms. Manchester United released a statement insisting that Greenwood remains suspended from first-team activities at the club.

A statement from Manchester United

Manchester United have made their position open concerning the recent developments as concerns Mason Greenwood. Following the rearrest of the United forward and being charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling, coercive behaviour, and assault, United are clear in their position that Greenwood remains suspended by the club.

The GMP first arrested Greenwood in January 2022, and the club suspended him from the first-team activities of the club. The suspension is still in force.

In the statement released on their official website, United noted the suspension. The club highlighted the criminal charges against Mason Greenwood.

The statement by the Greater Manchester Police states that they had charged and remanded a 21-year-old man with controlling and coercive behaviour, attempted rape and Section 47 assault of a woman.

Greenwood will appear at Manchester & Salford Magistrates Court on Monday, 17 October 2022, following his arrest on Saturday, 15 October.

The genesis of the matter

In January this year, rumours surfaced on the internet that a Manchester United forward was arrested for several criminal offences. Amid denials and keeping the identity of the offending player under wraps, it eventually emerged that Mason Greenwood was the player in question.

The Greater Manchester police then released a statement saying they had seen social media images and videos posted by a woman that suggested incidents of physical violence. The force claimed they launched an investigation, and following inquiries, they confirmed a man in his 20s was in their custody on suspicion of rape and assault.

Despite keeping the suspect from the public, it eventually emerged that it was Mason Greenwood when Manchester United released a statement saying that the united forward would not return to training or play any matches for the club until further notice.

In the statement, the club said they were aware of images and allegations circulating on social media, adding that United does not condone violence of any kind.
