MWOS Football Club, in Norton

In Norton, Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe, the company has set up a football club, MWOS Football Club (MWOS FC), an amateur, community-based football club that is giving youths a chance to showcase their football talent. This initiative was born out of the need to have youth-focused activities in Norton that would help develop talent and, in the long run, feed talent into the national team. The idea of creating local football stars would help a lot of youth to have some individuals to look up to who are role models in sport and help deter other young adults from the ills of drug abuse, crime, and misdemeanors. This initiative gave every youth in Norton a chance to show that they have what it takes to be on the football pitch and, in the process, create role models to whom other youth look up for inspiration. The goal was to also entertain the fans with good football and attract other big names in football, both teams and individuals, to the doors of Ngoni Stadium in Norton.

This initiative is drawing young men from many of the neighborhoods of Norton, such as Katanga, Ngoni, Nharira, and Maridale. In collaboration with the Norton City Council, MWOS has invested in the refurbishment of the community football ground in Ngoni, where the club fulfills its fixtures. With the aid of the community, there has been the development of a stadium canteen at Ngoni Stadium that serves food to supporters. MWOS FC participated in the ZIFA Mashonaland West Division 2B Football League, with ambitions of playing in the top-flight Premier Soccer League (PSL). The team recently gained promotion to the Northern Region Soccer League (Division 1). This promotion means that MWOS FC is a step closer to achieving promotion into the top-flight league. The depth and talent of the squad, together with the expertise of the technical staff, should be enough to help the team gain promotion into the top-flight division. Over time, local fans have begun to rally more and more behind the team as they have been successful in the ZIFA Mashonaland West Division 2B league, putting Norton on the football map in Zimbabwe.

MWOS FC was the brainchild of the directors of Moor’s World of Sport. They saw it fit to form a completely new entity, start from the bottom, and include the community as much as possible. Out of these deliberations, MWOS FC was born in the month of September 2019. Unfortunately, a few months down the line, COVID-19 spread through Zimbabwe and the rest of the world, and all sporting activities were put on hold to avoid the spread of the virus.

When eventually the COVID-19 ban was lifted, MWOS FC continued from where it left off and duly joined the ZIFA Mashonaland West Division 2 league. The team lived up to expectations, and they managed to start off their season on a high, managing to win over 75% of their matches and ensuring that they maintained the top spot in the Mashonaland West Division 2B league. This effort and beautiful form have eventually led to the team being named champions of the Mashonaland West Division 2B leagues, with eyes now set on the Premier Soccer League. The initial goal to gain promotion into Division One was a success, and eyes are now set on gaining promotion into the top flight in Zimbabwe, PSL.
