Marseille Stands By Greenwood Signing Despite Criticism

Pablo Longoria, president of Olympique Marseille, has firmly defended the club’s decision to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United despite facing criticism. Greenwood, 22, made a £26.6 million move from Old Trafford to the French club in August, with a contract running until 2029. The forward had previously been at the center of serious legal accusations, which were dropped earlier in 2023.

Despite some backlash, including opposition from the local mayor, Longoria remains confident in the club’s choice, emphasizing that all necessary information was carefully reviewed before proceeding with the transfer.

Thorough Process and Internal Decision

Longoria explained the process behind signing Greenwood, noting that the club made its decision after gathering all relevant information. He addressed the criticism from Marseille’s mayor, stating it only reinforced their belief in the steps they took. “We didn’t investigate as judges,” Longoria clarified, “but we considered all the details before making what we believe was the right choice.”

The Marseille president also mentioned that Greenwood was quickly discussed with manager Roberto de Zerbi, who had prior knowledge of the player’s capabilities. Both Longoria and De Zerbi agreed that Greenwood’s talent made him a valuable addition to the squad.

Greenwood’s Impact in France

Since arriving at Marseille, Greenwood has already made a significant impact, scoring five goals in his first three appearances. His contributions have helped the team start the season on an unbeaten run, following a summer of major squad changes under the leadership of new coach De Zerbi, who joined the club after leaving Brighton.

Although Greenwood’s performances have been praised in France, England’s caretaker manager Lee Carsley revealed that the forward wasn’t considered for the national team, a decision Longoria chose not to comment on, preferring to focus on Greenwood’s progress in Ligue 1.

Longoria reiterated the club’s satisfaction with Greenwood’s behavior and performance, expressing optimism about his future at Marseille.
