Clinical Barcelona and Bayern secure Quarter-final spots

Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League action delivered a sensational 23 goals across four matches, as quarter-finalists were confirmed in spectacular fashion. While the heavyweights largely flexed their muscles, the night was defined by individual milestones.

Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle United (Agg. 8-3)

In what began as a “breathless” first half, Newcastle twice fought back through an Anthony Elanga brace to keep the tie level at 3-3 on aggregate. However, a Lamine Yamal penalty in first-half stoppage time broke the Magpies’ resolve.

Hansi Flick’s side then launched a second-half blitz, scoring four unanswered goals. Robert Lewandowski netted a quick-fire double, while Raphinha finished with two goals and the Player of the Match award. The 7-2 result marks one of Newcastle’s heaviest European defeats, ending their ambitious continental run.

*Liverpool 4-0 Galatasaray (Agg. 4-1)*

After trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Liverpool produced a dominant “near-perfect” display at Anfield to overturn the deficit. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring early, but the headlines belonged to Mohamed Salah.

Despite seeing a first-half penalty saved, the “Egyptian King” responded in the second half with a goal and an assist for Hugo Ekitike.

Salah’s strike was his 50th Champions League goal, making him only the 11th player in history to reach that landmark. Ryan Gravenberch also found the net to cap a 4-1 aggregate victory.

*Bayern Munich 4-1 Atalanta (Agg. 10-2)*

Bayern Munich completed a ruthless demolition of Atalanta, becoming the first team this season to hit double figures on aggregate. Harry Kane continued his record-breaking season, scoring twice to reach 50 career Champions League goals in just 66 appearances, faster than any player except Erling Haaland and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

18-year-old sensation Lennart Karl also made history, becoming the youngest German player to both score and assist in a UCL knockout match.

*Tottenham 3-2 Atletico Madrid (Agg. 5-7)*

Spurs managed to snap an eight-game winless run with a spirited victory in North London, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the 5-2 damage from the first leg. Xavi Simons was the standout for Igor Tudor’s side, scoring twice including a late penalty. However, goals from Julian Alvarez and David Hancko ensured Atletico stayed out of reach.

While Spurs exit the competition, the performance provides a much-needed morale boost as they head back to a crucial domestic relegation battle.
